A taxicab veered onto a sidewalk in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday, striking six pedestrians, including a 9-year-old boy, The Associated Press reports.
The incident occurred near Macy’s flagship store at Herald Square around 4 p.m., leaving three individuals with injuries requiring hospital treatment.
According to a New York Police Department (NYPD) spokesperson, the taxi driver may have experienced a medical episode prior to the accident, although the investigation is still ongoing and this has not been confirmed.
Two victims, including the 9-year-old boy, were transported to Weill Cornell Medical Center, while one other person was taken to Bellevue Hospital. All three were reported to be in stable condition. The remaining three pedestrians who were struck by the taxi refused medical attention at the scene.
The taxi jumped the curb, colliding with the pedestrians who were on the sidewalk. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities.
Video footage from the scene showed the yellow taxi with significant damage, including a dislodged front bumper, on the sidewalk surrounded by police tape. The vehicle was later towed away by authorities.
The NYPD is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including a potential medical issue experienced by the taxi driver.
