Russian-Born US Citizen Receives 15-Year Sentence for Espionage in Russia
A Russian-born US citizen, already serving time in a Russian prison for bribery, has been handed a second 15-year sentence, this time for espionage, The Associated Press reports, citing reports from Russian news agencies on Tuesday.
Gene Spector, a former executive at a medical equipment company in Russia, was charged with espionage by a Moscow court in August 2023. Details surrounding the specific allegations were not made public.
This second conviction comes after Spector was initially sentenced to 3.5 years in prison in September 2022 for facilitating bribes to Anastasia Alekseyeva, an aide to former Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich. Alekseyeva was herself sentenced to 12 years in April for accepting bribes in the form of two expensive overseas vacation trips.
Arkady Dvorkovich served as Deputy Prime Minister under Dmitry Medvedev from 2012 to 2018. He is currently the head of the international chess federation FIDE.
