Amtrak passengers in the Northeast Corridor faced significant delays and cancellations on Monday, with disruptions centered around New York Penn Station and extending to services between Boston and Washington, DC, Bloomberg reports.
The issues caused widespread inconvenience for travelers during a busy holiday season.
Amtrak attributed the delays to signal power issues in and out of New York Penn Station. Freezing temperatures across parts of the tristate region may have exacerbated the situation, straining the power infrastructure that supports the Northeast Corridor — the busiest rail network in the United States.
In addition to the signal problems:
- Eight train services were canceled outright.
- Two trains running between Boston and Washington were suspended due to equipment shortages.
Passengers were warned to expect “significant delays,” with many experiencing disruptions to their plans as Amtrak worked to resolve the issues. The timing of the delays — coinciding with holiday travel — amplified the challenges for commuters and vacationers alike.
Amtrak has acknowledged the disruptions and is working to restore services as quickly as possible. However, no immediate timeline was provided for the resolution of the signal power issues or the resumption of full operations.
