Former late-night host Conan O’Brien shared poignant memories of his parents, Ruth Reardon O’Brien and Dr. Thomas F. O’Brien, who passed away last week just three days apart, CNN reports.

In an interview with the Boston Globe, O’Brien described his parents as a complementary pair, each possessing unique qualities that enriched their lives and his upbringing.

O’Brien recounted his mother’s dedication to both her legal career and her family, noting her role in raising him and his five siblings. He praised his father, a doctor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, for his commitment to global health, specifically highlighting his work educating physicians in developing countries about antibiotic resistance. O’Brien fondly recalled a formative trip to South America with his father during seventh grade, describing it as a pivotal experience that instilled in him a love for travel.

He characterized his father as “the dreamer,” recounting his father’s adventurous spirit, exemplified by a trip to Peru to launch a hospital website. In contrast, he described his mother as “the realist,” the grounding force who ensured the family’s practical needs were met amidst his father’s ambitious endeavors.

Despite their contrasting personalities, O’Brien emphasized the strong bond between his parents, rooted in their shared Irish Catholic heritage and their unwavering commitment to excellence. He described them as “kindred spirits,” united by their hard work and discipline.

O’Brien’s own success in the entertainment industry seems to reflect the values instilled by his parents. He is set to host the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025, a testament to his own dedication and drive.
