Wyoming State Parks to Host Annual First Day Hikes on January 1
Wyoming State Parks, Trails, and the Office of Outdoor Recreation are inviting residents and visitors to kick off the new year with the 14th annual First Day Hikes event on January 1, Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports.
This nationwide initiative, supported by America’s state parks, encourages individuals and families to begin the year by exploring the outdoors.
First Day Hikes take place across all 50 states, with participants of all ages invited to join free, guided hikes at Wyoming’s state parks and historic sites. The event not only promotes physical and mental well-being but also highlights the natural beauty and recreational opportunities available year-round in the state’s parks.
“This event has become a cherished tradition for families and outdoor enthusiasts throughout the state, drawing a record-breaking 1,132 participants on Jan. 1, 2024… We are excited to be part of this national celebration and to promote appreciation for the beauty of Wyoming’s state parks and historic sites,” said Laurel Stephens, communications and marketing manager for Wyoming State Parks and Cultural Resources.
On January 1, hikes will be offered at 18 state parks and historic sites across Wyoming. Attendance is free, with all day-use fees waived for the day to encourage participation. Hike lengths will vary from 1 to 3 miles, and park staff and volunteers will lead the groups.
One of the hikes will take place at Curt Gowdy State Park, starting at 1 p.m. at the Visitor Center. The hike will cover 1 to 2 miles of easy terrain.
Participants will also have the chance to win a 2025 Annual Day Use Pass and be entered into a statewide grand prize drawing at each participating site.
Organizers encourage attendees to dress warmly for winter conditions, as trails may be covered in snow. While hot drinks and refreshments will be provided at many locations, participants are advised to bring their own water and snacks.
