India will adopt a pragmatic and compromising approach in its dealings with the incoming Trump administration, aiming to maintain strong bilateral ties with the United States, Bloomberg reports, citing External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
Speaking at an event in New Delhi on Monday, Jaishankar acknowledged the potential for increased dynamism and unpredictability in global affairs under President Trump’s leadership. He emphasized the need for a “give and take” approach in managing the relationship between the two major economies.
This is the first public statement outlining India’s strategy for navigating its relationship with the new US administration, which has previously threatened a 100% tariff on BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) should they abandon the US dollar for international trade.
US-India relations have significantly strengthened over the past two decades, particularly amid heightened US-China tensions. The US increasingly views India as a crucial strategic partner in countering China’s influence, especially within the Indo-Pacific region. This strategic alignment was further cemented last year with agreements between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Biden to enhance cooperation, including sharing advanced technologies to boost India’s manufacturing sector.
