The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced that Muddy Mountain Road will close for the winter season beginning Monday, December 2.
The closure is an annual measure taken due to weather and road conditions, and the road will reopen in the spring when conditions allow.
Muddy Mountain Road serves as the primary access route to the Muddy Mountain Environmental Education Area, two campgrounds, and several trails, all of which are managed by the BLM. While the road will be closed to vehicle traffic, the Muddy Mountain area will remain open for snowmobile use on designated state trails.
The 1,260-acre Muddy Mountain Environmental Education Area is located south of Casper and is a popular destination for outdoor recreation. The area features a 2-mile Interpretive Nature Trail that connects the Lodgepole and Rim campgrounds. The trail includes 28 interpretive signs and is handicap accessible, offering visitors scenic overlooks and a unique view of the valley below. However, the trail is restricted to hikers only.
