A recent government study highlights Wyoming as one of the top states for pursuing a tech career, with graduates in tech-related fields earning significantly more than their peers in other industries, K2 Radio reports.

According to the study, Wyoming tech graduates earn a median salary of $60,313 four years after graduation—50.6% higher than the $40,050 median earned by all other graduates in the state. This positions Wyoming as a leading state for tech education and career opportunities, scoring 7.02 out of 10 on the ranking of states for tech careers.

With 10 institutions offering tech-related courses, Wyoming’s average tuition for these programs is relatively affordable, at $10,537 per year. The state’s combination of lower educational costs and higher starting salaries makes it an attractive option for aspiring tech professionals.

Alaska, which tops the rankings with a score of 7.31 out of 10, offers tech graduates a median salary of $76,773—146.1% higher than the state median for all graduates. In contrast, Utah, ranked third, provides a median tech salary of $74,702 with slightly higher tuition costs averaging $16,387 annually.

Dhawal Shah, CEO and founder of Class Central, notes that the growing demand for tech professionals spans industries like healthcare, finance, and education. This demand drives competitive salaries, flexibility for remote or hybrid work, and additional perks such as stock options and retirement benefits.

“Tech jobs often come with greater flexibility for remote or hybrid work,” said Shah.

He emphasized the appeal of these roles for individuals seeking a strong work-life balance.

The study also reveals notable variations in salaries, tuition costs, and the availability of tech programs across states:

  • Kentucky ranks fourth with a median tech salary of $49,798—58.3% higher than other graduates in the state.
  • Maryland is fifth, where tech grads earn $66,943, a 65.9% premium over other fields.
  • Rhode Island ranks as the least favorable state for tech careers, scoring 1.04 out of 10. Despite a median tech salary of $67,325, its high annual tuition costs of $26,628 diminish its appeal.

The study underscores the high return on investment for students entering the tech field, especially in states like Wyoming, where the combination of affordable education and competitive salaries creates substantial economic benefits. As industries continue to adopt digital solutions, the demand for tech expertise is expected to grow, further solidifying the sector as a lucrative career choice.
