Seven-foot-nine freshman Olivier Rioux, the Guinness World Record holder for tallest teenager, will redshirt his first season at the University of Florida, The Associated Press reports, citing Gators head coach Todd Golden.

This decision means the highly anticipated Canadian center will not play in any games during the 2023-24 season, preserving his college eligibility.

Rioux, whose imposing height has captivated fans and garnered national attention, would have forfeited a year of his four-year eligibility had he played in even a single game. Instead, he will dedicate the upcoming season to training and skill development with his teammates, remaining a freshman for the 2024-25 season.

Despite not seeing game action this year, Rioux has already become a fan favorite. During home games, chants of “Oli” echoed through the arena, culminating in a brief appearance on the court during the final minutes of Monday night’s victory over Grambling State. Coach Golden even took the opportunity to address Rioux amidst the celebratory atmosphere.

Golden praised Rioux’s maturity and receptiveness to coaching.

“He’s a great kid, and he’s a pleaser,” Golden said. “He wants to do what others think is best for him. And he’s coachable. Ultimately, it’s his decision, but I think redshirting is what’s best for him, his family, and our staff.”
