As the jockeying for positions in Donald Trump’s second-term cabinet intensifies, Key Square Group LP founder Scott Bessent has emerged as a leading contender for the Treasury Secretary position, Bloomberg reports.

In an interview on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends,” Bessent praised Trump’s economic agenda, predicting a “golden age” for the next four years.

Bessent, a prominent Trump supporter during the campaign, has garnered endorsements from key allies like Steve Bannon and Ralph Reed. He has also been praised for his ability to bridge the gap between working-class Americans and elite business leaders like Elon Musk, a key component of Trump’s winning coalition.

However, Bessent’s candidacy has faced resistance from some quarters, including Cantor Fitzgerald LP CEO Howard Lutnick, who has expressed concerns about Bessent’s stance on protectionist policies.

Meanwhile, the selection of Congressman Matt Gaetz as Attorney General has sparked controversy and raised questions about Trump’s ability to secure confirmation for his nominees. Gaetz, a staunch Trump ally, resigned his House seat on Wednesday following the announcement. He is a polarizing figure within his own party, facing allegations of sexual misconduct and facing a House inquiry.

Trump’s choice of Gaetz, a figure known for his controversial views and aggressive style, has raised concerns among Senate Republicans. Even former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has predicted that Gaetz’s nomination will not be confirmed.

The nomination process will be a key test of Trump’s influence over the GOP-controlled Senate, where he will need to navigate the complexities of navigating confirmation hearings and securing support for his chosen cabinet members.
