President-elect Donald Trump has named Susie Wiles, the de facto manager of his successful campaign, as his White House chief of staff, The Associated Press reports.

This historic appointment marks the first time a woman will hold this influential position.

Wiles, known for her disciplined and effective campaign leadership, is widely credited with steering Trump’s 2020 campaign to victory. She maintained a low profile, shunning the spotlight and even declining to speak at the victory celebration. This strategic approach, in contrast to Trump’s history of frequent staff changes, allowed her to earn the president-elect’s trust and respect.

This first major decision of Trump’s presidency is expected to be a defining test for his incoming administration. While Wiles lacks extensive federal government experience, she boasts a close relationship with the president-elect and a proven ability to manage his often impulsive nature.

Trump, who has admitted to hiring the “wrong people” in his first term, has expressed optimism that Wiles’ appointment signals a shift towards a more cohesive and effective team.

The role of chief of staff is critical to a president’s success. The individual serves as the president’s confidant, helps execute their agenda, and balances competing political and policy priorities. They also act as a gatekeeper, influencing who the president interacts with.

Chris Whipple, author of “The Gatekeepers,” highlighted the importance of the position, stating, “At the end of the day the most important thing is telling the president what he doesn’t want to hear.”

While Wiles’ ability to manage Trump is seen as a strength, her lack of White House experience is a potential drawback.

Wiles, a longtime Florida-based Republican strategist, has a history of successful campaigns, including running Trump’s Florida campaigns in 2016 and 2020. She also managed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ successful bid for office in 2018.

Despite her limited experience in Washington, Wiles’ ability to work with diverse personalities and her unwavering loyalty are considered valuable assets. She has been described as an inclusive leader who seeks input from others and is steadfastly loyal to her team.
