Australian breaker Rachael Gunn, better known as “Raygun,” has announced her retirement from competitive breaking, just three months after her controversial performance at the Paris Olympics, The Associated Press reports.
The 37-year-old Sydney university lecturer, who was part of the inaugural Olympic breaking competition, was widely ridiculed for her unconventional routine, which included a kangaroo hop and ultimately failed to score points in any of her rounds.
Gunn initially planned to continue competing, but the public backlash proved too much.
The Sydney native’s unorthodox style sparked controversy and conspiracy theories online, with some questioning the Olympic qualifying process itself. Gunn was subjected to relentless social media scrutiny, including mocking sketches on Jimmy Fallon’s late-night show. She was even chased by cameras through the streets of Paris, trying to escape the public scrutiny of her performance.
Despite the criticism, Gunn defended her unique style and the validity of her qualification process. She even apologized for the commotion caused by her performance, while simultaneously expressing gratitude for the support she received from the breaking community.
However, the online vitriol appears to have taken its toll. Gunn will now focus on her passion for breaking outside of competition.
Gunn’s retirement comes at a time of uncertainty for breaking’s future within the Olympic program. The sport is not yet scheduled for inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Games or the Brisbane 2032 Games.
