Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) has extended congratulations to several Wyoming candidates who were successfully re-elected after signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge in the November 5th general election.

The Pledge, which commits candidates to oppose any tax increases, has been a key platform for those seeking to assure voters of their stance on fiscal issues.

The following candidates from Wyoming were among those who signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge and secured re-election:

  • U.S. House: Harriet Hageman
  • U.S. Senate: John Barrasso
  • State House: Clarence Styvar, Jeremy Haroldson, Rachel Rodriguez-Williams
  • State Senate: Tim Salazar

The Taxpayer Protection Pledge, created by ATR in 1985 and championed by former President Ronald Reagan, requires candidates to publicly commit to opposing tax hikes. This written pledge is intended to hold elected officials accountable to their promises and make it more difficult for them to reverse course once in office. Over 1,400 federal and state officeholders and candidates have signed the Pledge since its inception, with 191 US House members and 42 US Senators currently on record as signers. The Pledge has become especially popular among Republican lawmakers, with 85% of House Republicans and 100% of Senate Republicans having made the commitment, compared to none of the Democratic members in Congress.

Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform, emphasized the importance of keeping taxes low as part of a broader strategy to encourage economic growth and job creation.

“Wyoming voters are looking for solutions that get Americans back to work and grow the economy. Signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge and holding the line on taxes is the first step in that process,” Norquist said.

The Taxpayer Protection Pledge remains a point of distinction between Republican and Democratic candidates, with the latter generally opposed to such commitments. Democratic leaders, including President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, have previously indicated their intent to raise taxes, particularly targeting the repeal of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that reduced taxes for many Americans.

Americans for Tax Reform continues to track new candidates signing the Pledge, and more information on these and other races can be found on the ATR Pledge Database.
