In Wyoming’s upcoming Senate race, long-serving Republican Senator John Barrasso is facing a challenge from Scott Morrow, a Democrat and retired postal union official from Laramie.
Barrasso, a familiar figure in Wyoming politics and a prominent Republican voice in Washington, has held his Senate seat since 2007. He was originally appointed after the passing of Senator Craig Thomas, bringing with him experience as an orthopedic surgeon and a former Wyoming state legislator from Casper. Before his time in office, Barrasso was known statewide for a medical news segment on local TV.
Barrasso has consistently opposed the Biden administration’s stances on issues such as immigration, fossil fuel policies, and air pollution regulations, positioning himself as a strong advocate for conservative priorities. He has also shown unwavering support for former President Donald Trump, a stance that contrasts with that of former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney, whose political career ended following her vocal criticism of Trump.
Now seeking a third full term, Barrasso has established himself as a high-ranking member of the Senate, currently holding the position of Senate Republican Conference Chair, the third-ranking role in the GOP’s leadership, as well as serving as the ranking member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. He has won his previous three Senate races by substantial margins, suggesting strong support from Wyoming voters.
Morrow, his Democratic opponent, has focused on labor rights and abortion rights during his campaign, but faces an uphill battle in the conservative-leaning state. Barrasso’s extensive political experience and statewide recognition make him a formidable incumbent as he seeks to continue representing Wyoming in the Senate. The election results are expected to reflect the solid Republican leanings of Wyoming’s electorate.
