With the US presidential election hanging in the balance, the possibility of tech mogul Elon Musk joining the government under a Donald Trump victory has sparked widespread debate, Al Jazeera reports.

Musk’s potential role as “Secretary of Cost Cutting” has raised concerns about the increasing influence of billionaires in American politics and the potential conflicts of interest such an appointment could present.

This isn’t the first time a wealthy businessman has entered the political arena. Former Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, and former President Trump himself are just a few examples of the super-rich who have held positions of power.

Musk, the world’s richest man, has advocated for drastic cuts in government spending, proposing a reduction of at least $2 trillion. While he has not provided specifics on where these cuts would be made, such a reduction would require significant cuts in areas like social security, healthcare, and defense, potentially causing significant economic pain.

Musk’s business track record, however, has its share of controversies. The value of X, the social media platform he purchased in 2022, has plummeted by 80%, primarily due to advertisers leaving over concerns about loosened content moderation. The Environmental Protection Agency has also accused SpaceX of polluting the area around its Texas base, causing damage to a state park and federal wildlife refuge.

Musk’s companies, SpaceX and Tesla, hold billions of dollars in government contracts, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest should he enter government. SpaceX alone has received over $15 billion in contracts for launching rockets and satellites for NASA and the Pentagon, while Tesla stands to benefit from potentially looser regulations under a Trump administration.

Musk has been a vocal supporter of Trump, donating millions to his campaign and advocating for him on social media. He has also taken a turn towards conservative causes, including promoting right-leaning figures on X and making substantial donations to conservative organizations.

Musk’s entry into the political arena has sparked criticism from both liberals and conservatives, raising concerns about the potential for his influence to reshape the political landscape and his business interests to sway government decisions.
