Interstate 80 was packed with vehicles waiting to resume travel Wednesday after closures in southern Wyoming following a crash during the season’s first major snowstorm.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) reported that the interstate, along with US 30, US 287, and WYO 789 between Rawlins and Muddy Gap, was closed around 8 a.m. due to the crash and reopened later at about 11:30 a.m.

The heavy snowfall began Tuesday and continued into early Wednesday, with accumulation levels nearing a foot in parts of central Wyoming, including Casper, according to the National Weather Service in Riverton. WYDOT’s traffic cameras showed lines of vehicles stopped on the snow-covered stretch of I-80 between Rawlins and Arlington.

Conditions improved by Wednesday afternoon as the storm moved eastward, clearing roads and improving visibility in the affected areas.
