Robert Downey Jr., the beloved actor known for his iconic portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has issued a stern warning: he will sue any future Marvel executives who attempt to recreate his likeness using artificial intelligence, The Associated Press reports.

In a recent episode of the “On With Kara Swisher” podcast, Downey declared his intention to “sue all future executives just on spec,” even after his death.

“My law firm will still be very active,” he asserted.

Downey’s strong stance against AI-generated recreations comes amidst growing concerns within the entertainment industry about the ethical implications of this technology. The recent Hollywood video game performers’ strike, ongoing since July, highlights the industry’s anxieties over AI’s potential to replace human actors.

While Downey maintains confidence that current Marvel executives would never attempt to replicate his performance with AI, he acknowledges the changing landscape of the industry. He fears that future executives might be less hesitant to exploit his likeness for commercial gain.

“I am not worried about them hijacking my character’s soul because there’s like three or four guys and gals who make all the decisions there anyway and they would never do that to me, with or without me,” he said on the podcast. “But you’re right, [those executives] will eventually be replaced.”

Downey’s comments raise crucial questions about the ownership of an actor’s performance and the extent to which AI can replicate the unique qualities that make them memorable. This discussion is particularly relevant as Downey is slated to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2026 as Doctor Doom in “Avengers: Doomsday.”

Neither Marvel Studios nor Robert Downey Jr.’s representatives have commented on this statement.
