In an inter-divisional dual swim meet on Saturday, the University of Wyoming’s women’s team and Colorado Mesa University’s men’s team each secured victories, Swim Swam reports.
The Wyoming Cowgirls defeated the Mavericks 185-115, while the Cowboys fell to Colorado Mesa 97-203 in Grand Junction, Colorado.
The Wyoming women showcased impressive depth and focus in the meet, with multiple first-place finishes across events. Head Coach Dave Denniston praised the team’s energy, noting standout swims from freshman Macey Hansen, who dominated the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:13.07, 16 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Hansen also won the 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 5:01.59.
Tara Joyce contributed significantly with wins in the 100-yard (51.64) and 200-yard freestyle (1:50.92), anchoring the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay, which finished in 3:26.96. Senior Brynlee Busskohl led the Cowgirls’ breaststroke events, taking first in both the 100-yard (1:02.97) and 200-yard (2:18.37) races. Freshmen Abby Bruss (200-yard butterfly) and Heidi Billings (200-yard backstroke) also delivered first-place swims.
The Cowgirls excelled in diving as well, with Natalie Six winning the 1-meter event with a score of 267.00 and Alicia Gonzalez claiming the 3-meter board with 308.03.
The Colorado Mesa men’s team had a strong showing, winning 11 events and setting multiple NCAA Division II qualifying times. Olympian Harry Stacey, in his collegiate debut, won both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle races, setting a Division II “B” cut time of 44.99 seconds in the 100. Stacey also contributed to the team’s winning 200-yard medley relay (1:29.20) and led off the 400-yard freestyle relay, which finished at 3:00.55.
Team captain Andrew Scoggin added two wins, taking the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events, while teammates Ty Mitton and Wyatt Hermanson claimed wins on the diving boards, both surpassing NCAA qualifying scores.
Despite falling short, Wyoming’s men had strong performances from senior Gavin Smith, who won the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.39) and 100-yard butterfly (49.19), and sophomore Andrew Ravegum, who took first in both breaststroke events. Coach Denniston commended the men’s efforts, expressing optimism as they prepare to face Air Force next Saturday.
The Cowgirls will travel to Greeley, Colorado, to compete against Northern Colorado on November 1, while both the men’s and women’s teams will host Air Force in Laramie on November 2. The Mavericks are set for more dual meets against Division I opponents, with the men’s team competing in Denver and the women’s team heading to Fort Collins to take on Colorado State.
