Acme Smoked Fish Corporation has issued a recall for its Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon, sold at Costco locations, due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, as confirmed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The recall affects 111 cases of twin 12-ounce packages with UPC code 0 96619 25697 6, Lot# 8512801270, and a best-by date of November 13, 2024.
The product, packaged in a vacuum-sealed black plastic with the label “Smoked Salmon” in blue and a salmon illustration, was distributed to the Southeast Costco Distribution Center in Florida between October 9 and October 13, 2024.
Consumers are advised not to consume the affected product and instead return it to Costco for a full refund or dispose of it. For questions, Acme Smoked Fish Corporation can be reached at 718-383-8585, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.
The FDA warns that Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. While healthy individuals may experience only temporary symptoms like fever, headaches, and gastrointestinal distress, the infection poses severe risks to pregnant women, including miscarriage or stillbirth.
For more information on listeria and food safety, the FDA and Poison Control have resources detailing the risks associated with this and other foodborne pathogens.
