Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing internal pressure, with a number of Liberal lawmakers calling for his resignation ahead of the next election, The Associated Press reports.

While Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland expressed confidence in Trudeau’s support, a letter circulating among Liberal MPs aims to persuade him to step down.

The move comes on the heels of recent electoral setbacks for the Liberal Party, including losses in key districts traditionally held by the party for years. The loss in Toronto, a Liberal stronghold, has fueled doubts about Trudeau’s leadership.

However, the exact number of Liberals supporting the letter calling for Trudeau’s resignation remains unclear.

Adding to the pressure, several Liberal lawmakers have announced they will not seek re-election. Meanwhile, Opposition Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has seized on the internal turmoil, publicly goading Trudeau about the potential revolt.

Trudeau’s legacy is intertwined with that of his father, former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, who led Canada for nearly 16 years starting in 1968. The current Prime Minister’s popularity has seen significant decline in recent years, and the recent electoral setbacks have only amplified concerns within his own party.
