The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) will reopen US Highway 14 between Dayton and Burgess Junction on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, following weeks of closure due to the Elk Fire.

Recent moisture and containment progress, with over 50% of the fire under control, have allowed for this reopening, bringing relief to the Sheridan community.

During the closure, WYDOT District 4 and the Wyoming Highway Patrol worked closely with Incident Command to assess when the road would be safe for both fire crews and travelers. The fire damaged around 20 miles of the route, including over 8,000 feet of guardrail, 30 signs, and multiple delineators. Thanks to the hard work of WYDOT crews, repairs were completed more quickly than expected, allowing the highway to reopen ahead of schedule.

Motorists traveling on US 14 should expect delays, including a reduced speed limit of 30 MPH, lane closures, flagging operations, pilot cars, and increased patrol presence within the fire zone. Maintenance activity will continue as repairs are finalized, and trucks are restricted from using the route, with the exception of authorized Elk Fire equipment.

WYDOT urges drivers to stay cautious, be aware of road conditions and changing weather, and use designated pullouts for any stops or photo opportunities. Additionally, Bighorn National Forest closures remain in effect, and cabin owners are advised to contact their permit administrators for access information. WYDOT thanks the public for their patience during this time.
