The family of West Virginia Governor Jim Justice, a Republican candidate for US Senate, has announced that it has paid off the debt owed to Beltway Capital, averting the foreclosure of the historic Greenbrier hotel, The Associated Press reports.

The 710-room hotel, a landmark known for hosting presidents, royalty, and congressional retreats, was facing auction this past summer after JPMorgan Chase sold a longstanding loan taken out by the governor to Beltway Capital, which declared it to be in default.

In August, the Justice family reached an agreement with Beltway Capital to pay off the debt by October 24, 2024, delaying the auction. Now, the family has confirmed the debt has been settled.

“This significant achievement comes as part of the family’s ongoing commitment to ensure the long-term stability and prosperity of their holdings, including The Greenbrier Resort, America’s Premier Resort,” the family stated in a press release.

Governor Justice, who acquired the Greenbrier in 2009, has repeatedly maintained that the debt situation was politically motivated. He said during a briefing with local media that the situation “cost us an unbelievable amount of money” and “was not any fun.”

The Greenbrier, which employs approximately 2,000 workers, is a crucial economic driver for the region. It has hosted major events like the PGA Tour golf tournament and NFL training camps. The hotel’s unique underground bunker, built for Congress during the Cold War, is now a popular tourist attraction.

Justice, who owns dozens of companies and has been accused of financial mismanagement in past legal cases, is facing a tight race in the US Senate election against former Wheeling mayor and Democrat Glenn Elliott.

The payment of the Greenbrier debt comes as Justice seeks to reassure voters of his financial stability and commitment to the state.
