Heavy rains have caused widespread flooding across Sri Lanka, prompting the closure of schools in Colombo and its suburbs on Monday, The Associated Press reports.

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) reported that the downpours, which began over the weekend, have impacted 134,000 people, with 240 homes damaged.

Three people have tragically drowned due to the floods, and nearly 7,000 others have been evacuated. As a safety precaution, authorities have cut electricity supply in some areas affected by the rising waters.

Local television channels have aired footage of towns submerged in floodwaters, with some areas showing water reaching the roofs of homes and shops.

The DMC has deployed Navy and army troops to aid in rescue efforts, providing food and other essential supplies to those affected.

Sri Lanka has been experiencing severe weather conditions since May, with heavy monsoon rains causing significant damage. In June, 16 people lost their lives due to floods and mudslides.
