Gaza Under Siege: Hundreds Killed, 400,000 Trapped as Israel Intensifies Bombardment
The situation in northern Gaza continues to deteriorate as Israeli forces maintain a tight siege, trapping hundreds of thousands of civilians and resulting in the deaths of at least 200 Palestinians in the last week, Al Jazeera reports.
On its 10th day, the military operation has seen intense bombardment, with Israeli airstrikes and artillery shelling targeting the Jabalia refugee camp and surrounding areas. Sunday morning saw a fresh wave of attacks, including an airstrike that killed eight members of a family in the Nuseirat refugee camp and another that claimed the lives of five people in the al-Ettesalat area west of Jabalia.
Palestinian Ambassador Majed Bamya, the deputy permanent observer to the United Nations, has condemned the situation, calling it “a genocide within the genocide.” He added that some 400,000 Palestinians are trapped in northern Gaza, with the Israeli military prohibiting any evacuations despite issuing an evacuation order.
The Israeli military confirmed carrying out strikes on 40 targets in the past 24 hours, claiming they destroyed weapons and killed Hamas fighters. However, these strikes have also resulted in civilian casualties, including a person killed in an airstrike east of Deir el-Balah and three Palestinians killed by artillery shelling in the Bureij refugee camp.
Reports also detail the demolition of dozens of homes in Jabalia, particularly in the al-Safatay and al-Tuwam neighborhoods, while an Israeli airstrike on a home in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood injured six Palestinians, most of them children.
