The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is warning the public to stay alert for wildlife on the move due to the Elk Fire, which is adding to the seasonal risk of animal-vehicle collisions, Sheridan Media reports.

Each fall, as daylight hours shift, the number of collisions typically rises, and the fire has now become a new factor in the mix.

Appearing on Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse, Wyoming Game and Fish Public Information Specialist Christina Schmidt noted that while no reports of wildlife injuries or deaths have been linked to the Elk Fire, the risk to drivers is increasing.

“It’s a positive that wildlife seems to be fleeing the fire,” Schmidt said.

This also means animals may cross roads in unexpected areas.

In addition to wildlife crossing in unfamiliar spots, the smoke from the fire is reducing visibility, further heightening the danger. Schmidt advised drivers to be cautious, especially during dawn and dusk when animals are most active. She reminded the public to always anticipate the possibility of more than one animal crossing, as wildlife tends to move in groups.

Game wardens are actively monitoring the situation, both by assisting with the fire response and watching for any injured or deceased wildlife. The department urges drivers to remain vigilant and slow down when traveling in areas affected by the fire and nearby roadways.
