The Crook County Coroner has identified 48-year-old Joseph Keith Neimeyer as the man fatally shot by a deputy during a Saturday incident in Sundance, Wyoming, Cowboy State Daily reports.
In a heartfelt social media post, Neimeyer’s daughter expressed her grief, as the family comes to terms with his sudden loss.
“I’ll miss you forever,” she wrote.
Crook County Coroner Mike Frolander, en route to Neimeyer’s autopsy in South Dakota, stated that the likely cause of death was a gunshot wound, though further details are pending the autopsy results. Neimeyer had minimal criminal history, with just a couple of speeding infractions, and leaves behind a wife and adult daughter in Sundance.
The Crook County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to a home invasion call on Saturday. A shot was reportedly fired inside the residence, and deputies located Neimeyer, the suspected intruder, walking about a block from the home. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Neimeyer pointed a firearm at a deputy, prompting the deputy to open fire. Neimeyer was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sheriff Jeff Hodge clarified that Neimeyer had previously lived at the home but was no longer welcome at the time of the incident. The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the probe into the officer-involved shooting, as is standard in such cases.
The investigation is ongoing.
