A new Marist Poll reveals an overwhelming majority of New York City residents, including a significant number of Democrats, believe Mayor Eric Adams should resign following his indictment on corruption charges, Bloomberg reports.
Sixty-nine percent of New York City residents surveyed, including 71% of Democrats, indicated that the first-term mayor should step down. Furthermore, 63% of residents believe Governor Kathy Hochul should initiate the process of removing Adams from office if he does not resign.
Federal prosecutors last week charged Adams with bribery, conspiracy, and breaking campaign finance laws. The former police captain stands accused of accepting illegal contributions to his 2021 campaign and receiving undisclosed gifts, including free flights, hotel upgrades, and other benefits. Prosecutors have hinted that additional charges may be forthcoming.
The Marist Poll also found that Adams’ approval rating has plummeted, with only 26% of residents approving of his performance. A staggering 74% disapprove. This decline in popularity preceded the indictment, as public scrutiny intensified following federal investigations into his inner circle and the city grappled with the influx of over 200,000 migrants in the past two years.
The Marist Poll surveyed 1,073 adults over age 18 residing in New York City through online and text-based interviews conducted on September 30 and October 1. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.4 percentage points.
