CNN Introduces Digital Paywall, Charging for Unlimited Access to Articles
CNN has introduced a digital paywall, marking a significant shift in its business model by charging some users $3.99 per month for unlimited access to its articles.
This move aims to bolster the news organization’s revenue as it adapts to the digital age.
In a memo, Alex MacCallum, CNN’s executive vice president of digital products and services, explained that users in the US will be asked to pay a recurring fee after reading a certain number of free articles.
“The vast majority of visitors who read only a few articles per month will not be impacted at this time,” she said.
Those who subscribe will gain access to exclusive content, including election features, original documentaries, and a daily curated selection of journalism, with fewer digital ads.
This new model is part of CNN’s long-term strategy to expand its digital revenue streams as traditional cable television viewership declines. The initiative follows a similar path to The New York Times’ successful paywall strategy, with MacCallum and CNN CEO Mark Thompson both having previously worked at the Times. Over time, CNN plans to enhance its digital offerings and introduce new products to better meet the needs of its audience.
Although most CNN.com content, such as breaking news and live blogs, will remain freely accessible, the paywall is expected to evolve as the company builds its subscription service.
