The military government of Myanmar has announced that recent floods have claimed the lives of 419 people across nine provinces, nearly doubling the previous death toll, Bloomberg reports.
The devastating floods, triggered by Typhoon Yagi and the southwest monsoon, have impacted over 140,000 people in 54 townships.
According to Deputy Junta Chief Soe Win, the floods have submerged around 750,000 acres of paddy fields, a significant blow to the agricultural sector. In response to the disaster, the government has allocated 30 billion kyat ($14.3 million) for relief and rehabilitation efforts. Schools are scheduled to reopen in October.
The United Nations has issued a report estimating that nearly 890,000 people have been affected by the floods. The UN warns that the situation remains fluid, with many areas still inaccessible, and expects both the number of affected individuals and fatalities to rise.
