T-Mobile’s Chief Executive Mike Sievert has refuted claims that preorder sales for Apple’s iPhone 16 line are disappointing, stating that sales are actually outperforming last year’s iPhone 15.
In an interview with CNBC, Sievert emphasized that consumers are increasingly opting for higher-end models, such as the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max.
Apple unveiled the iPhone 16 series on September 9, with preorders starting the same day. The devices will be available in stores beginning September 20, with prices starting at $999 for the iPhone 16 Pro and $1,199 for the Pro Max.
Sievert addressed concerns from analysts who predicted lackluster sales, labeling those expectations as “nonsense.” He noted a growing interest in the Pro models and suggested that the upcoming introduction of generative artificial intelligence features—expected to roll out with iOS 18.1 in October—might lead to sustained sales momentum.
The iPhone 16 is being marketed as the first Apple smartphone designed specifically for its AI capabilities, allowing users to create texts and images through simple prompts. While initial AI features will be released in phases, Sievert expressed optimism about the potential for extended sales cycles as these capabilities become available.
Apple has not disclosed specific sales figures for its iPhones, but the company’s shares rose by 3.71% during Thursday’s trading session, reflecting investor confidence amid the new product launch.
The iPhone 16 lineup, including the standard models and higher-end variations, officially launched in almost 60 countries, marking a significant event for Apple as it aims to boost sales following a decline in iPhone sales in Q3.
