Former President Jimmy Carter, approaching his 100th birthday, was honored with a grand musical celebration at Atlanta’s historic Fox Theater.
The event on Tuesday, titled “Jimmy Carter 100: A Celebration in Song,” brought together notable musicians and public figures to pay tribute to Carter’s life and legacy through performances that spanned multiple genres.
Performers included Angélique Kidjo, BeBe Winans, Eric Church, India Arie, The B-52s, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chamber Chorus, among many others. The eclectic mix of artists highlighted Carter’s lifelong love of music, which his grandson Jason Carter emphasized as central to the former president’s life.
“He’s always lived his life celebrating with music,” Jason Carter said.
He noted how music had always been a part of his grandfather’s events, from his time in the White House to today.
While Carter, who remains in hospice care, could not attend in person, the evening was filled with tributes from those inspired by his humanitarian work and leadership. Many of the performers, like musician Chuck Leavell, shared personal stories about the “rock and roll president,” reflecting on how music played a role in his campaign and presidency.
The event also featured video messages from former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and current President Joe Biden, each acknowledging Carter’s commitment to peace, human rights, and environmental protection. The money raised from the celebration will support The Carter Center’s global initiatives in peace, health, and freedom.
