UAW President Fain Announces Strike Authorization Vote Plans at Stellantis
  • PublishedSeptember 18, 2024

United Auto Workers (UAW) President Shawn Fain announced that the union plans to hold strike authorization votes at Stellantis due to the automaker’s alleged failure to meet commitments made in last year’s labor agreement, CNN reports.

Fain stated on Tuesday that the UAW is prepared to take strike action if Stellantis does not address the union’s demands.

In a speech to union members, Fain emphasized the union’s readiness to strike at one or more Stellantis plants, marking an unprecedented move in the current contract period. The UAW secured the right to strike mid-contract in 2023 agreements with Stellantis, General Motors, and Ford if job protections, such as plant closures, were violated.

“We are 100% within our rights and within our power to take strike action if necessary,” Fain said.

The dispute centers on claims that Stellantis is not adhering to its commitments on investments and vehicle production. Stellantis, which manufactures Jeep, Ram, Dodge, and Chrysler vehicles, denied the allegations, stating that it is still within the contract’s timeline to fulfill its obligations. The company also rejected claims of moving Dodge Durango production to Canada and expressed disappointment with Fain’s public criticism.

In its response, Stellantis urged further dialogue.

“A strike does not benefit anyone,” he said.

Despite this, Fain has remained firm, signaling the union’s willingness to act if necessary. Strike votes are expected soon at select Stellantis locals.
