The United States has reclaimed the Solheim Cup, defeating the European team 15 ½ – 12 ½ at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in a dramatic finish, marking the first time the US has won the coveted trophy since 2017, ending a seven-year drought, CNN reports.
Lilia Vu emerged as the American hero, securing the clinching half-point in the final match. Despite trailing by two holes with two to play, Vu delivered an incredible approach shot on the 18th, landing her ball just a few feet from the hole. She confidently sank the birdie putt, sealing the win for the US.
The Americans dominated throughout the weekend, setting a record-breaking lead of 6-2 after the first day of play. World No. 1 Nelly Korda led the charge, winning both her matches and showcasing the strength of the US team.
Europe mounted a valiant comeback attempt on the second day, but the US remained resilient, holding onto a 10-6 lead heading into the final day. Europe needed to replicate the “Miracle of Medinah” – the 2012 Ryder Cup comeback victory – to secure the trophy. However, while Charley Hull put up a remarkable fight, defeating Nelly Korda in the first singles match, it was ultimately not enough.
Megan Khang, Rose Zhang, and Allisen Corpuz all secured wins for the US on Sunday, while Andrea Lee, Lauren Coughlin, and the victorious Vu earned half-points to clinch the overall victory.
The Solheim Cup is a biennial competition, and the Americans will now be aiming to defend their title in 2025. The European team will be looking to bounce back and regain the trophy in two years.
