Target Plans to Hire 100,000 Seasonal Workers for Holiday Shopping Rush
  • PublishedSeptember 17, 2024

Target announced Monday that it aims to hire 100,000 seasonal employees at its stores and supply chain facilities ahead of the 2024 holiday shopping season.

The seasonal hires are intended to bolster the company’s existing workforce and supplement its “On Demand” employees, who work flexible shifts.

The Minneapolis-based retailer is looking to fill various in-store roles, including guest advocates, fulfillment experts, style consultants, and general merchandising positions. Target also has openings in its supply chain facilities to support warehouse operations. Most of the seasonal workers will be placed in retail locations across the country, and applications for these positions open on September 25.

This year’s seasonal hiring target matches the company’s plans from the previous three holiday seasons. Alongside other retailers, such as Aldi and Bath & Body Works, which plan to hire 13,000 and 30,000 seasonal workers respectively, Target is preparing for an influx of holiday shoppers.

To attract budget-conscious customers, Target has announced it will offer its largest holiday product assortment to date, with over half of its toys priced under $20 and thousands of stocking stuffers under $5. Deals for holiday shoppers will begin in early October with Target Circle Week, a week-long promotion for loyalty members running from October 6-12.

Target has nearly 1,963 stores in the US and plans to use the additional workers to assist with popular services like order pickup, drive-up, and stocking shelves. The company also noted that its seasonal roles offer competitive wages, benefits, and the potential for permanent positions, as more than half of last year’s seasonal employees were offered continued employment.

This announcement comes as retailers brace for a holiday season marked by varied consumer spending patterns. According to a recent Bankrate survey, 48% of shoppers plan to begin purchasing holiday items by Halloween. While 43% expect their spending to remain the same, 24% anticipate spending more, and 33% plan to cut back.
