National Cheeseburger Day is being celebrated with special promotions from several major fast-food chains this week, giving cheeseburger enthusiasts a chance to enjoy their favorite meal at a discounted price.
McDonald’s is marking the occasion with a notable offer: double cheeseburgers for just 50 cents. This promotion is available exclusively through the McDonald’s app on Wednesday, September 18.
Burger King and Wendy’s are also joining in the festivities. Burger King is giving away free cheeseburgers to members of its Royal Perks program with any purchase on September 18, as reported by People magazine. Meanwhile, Wendy’s is offering a 1-cent junior bacon cheeseburger with any purchase through their app, also highlighted by People.
The city of Pasadena, California, is recognized as the birthplace of the American cheeseburger. According to local nonprofit Visit Pasadena, Lionel Clark Sternberger created the first cheeseburger in 1924 at his father’s roadside stand.
This National Cheeseburger Day aligns with broader trends in the fast-food industry as companies test various promotions and menu changes to attract customers amid ongoing economic pressures. McDonald’s, for example, recently experienced its first global sales decline in over three years, which it attributed to challenges in drawing cash-strapped consumers despite higher menu prices.
To address these challenges, McDonald’s has extended its $5 Meal Deal through December, which includes a choice of a McDouble or McChicken sandwich, fries, chicken McNuggets, and a soft drink. Additionally, the company continues to offer Free Fries Friday, a promotion providing free medium fries with a minimum purchase of $1 every Friday through 2024.
