Trump, Harris Hit the Campaign Trail: Fundraising, Rallies, Debate Afterglow

Trump, Harris Hit the Campaign Trail: Fundraising, Rallies, Debate Afterglow
  • PublishedSeptember 13, 2024

The 2024 presidential race is heating up, with both major candidates crisscrossing the country in a flurry of events. Former President Donald Trump is focusing on Western states, while Vice President Kamala Harris is targeting Pennsylvania, a key swing state, The Associated Press reports.

Trump will start his day on Friday with a “news conference” at his Los Angeles-area golf club. This will be his second consecutive Friday holding such an event, although his previous appearance in New York did not involve taking questions from the press. Instead, he spent nearly an hour addressing allegations of sexual misconduct, a topic he resurrected days before his debate with Harris. It’s unclear what Trump will discuss at Friday’s event.

Following the news conference, Trump heads to northern California for a fundraiser hosted by billionaire software developer Tom Siebel and his wife. This is his second fundraising stop in California in two days as he tries to close the fundraising gap with Harris. Harris reported raising $361 million in August from nearly 3 million donors, significantly outpacing Trump’s $130 million.

Later on Friday, Trump will hold a rally in Las Vegas, Nevada, the city he visited briefly last month to promote his proposal to end federal taxes on workers’ tips. He also announced a new proposal on Thursday to end taxes on overtime pay. This swing state, which Trump narrowly lost in 2016 and 2020, is a key target for both campaigns.

Meanwhile, Harris is taking advantage of the momentum gained from Tuesday night’s debate. She is holding rallies in Johnstown and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, her second day of back-to-back rallies after events in North Carolina on Thursday. While speaking in Charlotte, Harris mocked Trump for his “concepts of a plan” for replacing the Affordable Care Act, highlighting his lack of concrete policy proposals.

Her campaign reported raising $47 million from 600,000 donors in the 24 hours following the debate. Harris has called for another debate, but Trump has declined.

Both campaigns are heavily focused on Nevada. The Republican ticket has visited the state four times since June. Trump held campaign events in Las Vegas three times, while his running mate, Senator JD Vance, held a rally in Henderson in July. The Democratic ticket has also visited Nevada four times since June, with Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, holding a joint rally in Las Vegas last month. Walz returned to the city for another campaign stop on Tuesday.
