Trump, Harris Exchange Personal Attacks While Talking About Ukraine War
The US presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, hosted by ABC News, delved into foreign policy, with a focus on the candidates’ approaches to the conflict in Ukraine.
Trump, in a recurring theme, promised that he would end the war before taking office if he were to win the election.
“If I were president, it would have never started… If I were president, Russia would have never, ever. I know [Russian President Vladimir] Putin very well. He would have never –and there was no threat of it either, by the way, for four years – have gone into Ukraine,” he said.
Trump twice sidestepped a question about whether he wished for Ukraine to win.
Harris countered Trump’s claims, arguing that if Trump had won in 2020, Putin “would be sitting in Kyiv with his eyes on the rest of Europe, starting with Poland.” She also addressed Polish-American voters.
“Why don’t you tell the 800,000 Polish Americans right here in Pennsylvania how quickly you would give up for the sake of favor and what you think is a friendship with what is known to be a dictator who would eat you for lunch,” she said.
Trump also alleged that Harris had been sent to negotiate with Russian and Ukrainian leaders to prevent the war but had failed.
“They sent her in to negotiate with Zelenskyy and Putin. And she did. And the war started three days later,” he said.
Harris denounced Trump’s claims as false.
