House GOP’s Shutdown Prevention Plan Faces Delays Amid GOP Defections
  • PublishedSeptember 11, 2024

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) was compelled to postpone a vote on his proposed plan to prevent a government shutdown, as internal GOP disagreements have threatened the measure’s viability.

Johnson had initially planned to hold the vote on a short-term government funding extension combined with a measure to enhance voter registration processes, but faced significant opposition from within his party.

The proposal in question includes a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the government for six months, paired with the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which aims to implement proof of citizenship requirements for voter registration. Despite the plan’s alignment with key Republican priorities, including support from former President Donald Trump, internal GOP dissent led Johnson to announce that there would be “no vote today.”

Several Republican lawmakers expressed concerns about the CR, which they view as a continuation of what they consider overreaching spending bills. Some conservative members opposed the CR on principle, arguing that it represents an extension of omnibus spending that they believe contributes to fiscal irresponsibility. Additionally, national security advocates within the GOP were apprehensive about the bill’s impact on military funding, preferring a shorter-term spending measure.

Johnson’s delay reflects the challenge of balancing the demands of various factions within the GOP. He has pledged to continue working through the weekend to build consensus and address concerns, emphasizing the importance of addressing voter security issues.

“The American people demand and deserve that we do everything possible to secure the elections,” Johnson stated

Thus he underscored the significance of the SAVE Act as part of the funding proposal.

Former President Trump, who has advocated for the SAVE Act, has urged House Republicans to reject any funding measure that does not address voter security concerns. Trump’s stance has added pressure on GOP lawmakers, reinforcing the need for a strong stance on the issue of election integrity.
