Stellantis Issues Major Recall for Over 1.2 Million Ram Trucks in the US
  • PublishedSeptember 9, 2024

Automotive giant Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, has issued a recall affecting more than 1.2 million Ram 1500 pickup trucks across the US due to a software malfunction that could disable the vehicles’ electronic stability control (ESC) system. The recall spans models from 2019 and 2021 through 2024.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that the malfunction could cause the anti-lock brake system to inadvertently disable the ESC. The ESC system plays a critical role in preventing vehicle skidding by controlling throttle and brake responses. According to Stellantis, while the malfunction may shut down the ESC, the brake systems of affected trucks would still function.

In addition to the vehicles recalled in the US, Stellantis also recalled 158,670 Ram trucks in Canada, 13,419 in Mexico, and 61,072 in other international markets. The company is also recalling 7,299 MOPAR ABS units used as replacement parts in affected vehicles.

Despite the recall’s magnitude, Stellantis reported no injuries or crashes related to the software issue. The company has assured customers that the problem can be addressed through a simple software update at Ram dealerships, free of charge. Notifications are set to be sent out to affected vehicle owners by mail starting October 3.

Ram truck owners are encouraged to check if their vehicle is part of the recall by visiting Stellantis’ recall website or the NHTSA database using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
