Le Pen Signals Willingness to Cooperate with New French Prime Minister Barnier
  • PublishedSeptember 9, 2024

In a recent interview with La Tribune, French far-right leader Marine Le Pen expressed her intention to work with newly appointed Prime Minister Michel Barnier, signaling that her party, National Rally, would not obstruct his efforts.

Le Pen’s comments come after Barnier, a member of the right-wing Republicans party and former EU Brexit negotiator, was chosen by President Emmanuel Macron to replace Gabriel Attal following the summer elections.

“We don’t wish to cause obstructions,” Le Pen said.

She indicated that her party may not oppose Barnier’s appointment, especially given his stance on immigration. Barnier has previously advocated halting non-European immigration for several years, aligning closely with Le Pen’s own policies.

Barnier’s appointment is significant in the context of a fractured French parliament, with Macron’s government requiring broad support to survive potential votes of no confidence. While left-wing parties have already rejected Barnier’s nomination, Le Pen’s position could be crucial in determining the prime minister’s ability to implement key policies, particularly regarding immigration and public spending.

One of Barnier’s immediate challenges will be navigating budget negotiations with the European Union, as France faces pressure to reduce its high deficit. His experience in European politics is seen as an asset in managing these complex discussions, and his ability to garner support across France’s political spectrum will be tested in the coming months.
