  • PublishedSeptember 5, 2024

A shooting at a high school in Staton, Georgia, on Wednesday afternoon claimed three lives and left nine people injured, CBS News reports, citing local authorities.

The suspect, a 14-year-old student, was taken into custody shortly after the incident.

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect and confirmed that he was armed with an AR platform-style gun. Sheriff Hosey stated there was no evidence suggesting any other shooters were involved.

According to a statement released by the FBI Atlanta, county authorities had interviewed the suspect in 2022 concerning online threats to commit a school shooting. The then-13-year-old boy and his father were interviewed. The boy denied responsibility for the threats, and his father stated that while he owned hunting guns, his son did not have unsupervised access to them.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
