Greta Thunberg Arrested in Copenhagen University Protest Against Israel Ties
Climate activist Greta Thunberg was among six people arrested on Wednesday during a protest at Copenhagen University, where they demanded the institution sever all ties with Israel, Fox News reports.
Thunberg joined members of the Students Against the Occupation group, an anti-Israel activist organization, in a demonstration at the university’s administration building. The group, which advocates for a complete boycott of Israeli universities and institutions, cited the Erasmus student exchange program and the Niels Bohr Institute as examples of unacceptable collaborations.
The protest escalated when police, responding to a disturbance call, entered the building and forcibly removed the protesters. Thunberg, who documented the incident on Instagram, described the police action as “violent” and claimed officers used a ram and assault rifles to gain entry.
The group’s main grievance focuses on the Erasmus program, which allows Israeli students to study in Denmark, and the Niels Bohr Institute, named after the renowned Jewish physicist.
Critics of Thunberg, however, pointed out the hypocrisy of her involvement in the protest, arguing that the university has partnered with Israeli groups on climate change initiatives. While Fox News Digital could not verify the existence of such programs, the Niels Bohr Institute does list “Physics of Ice, Climate and Earth” as a primary research area.
Copenhagen police confirmed that Thunberg was part of a group of approximately 20 protesters who demonstrated inside the university administration building. In addition to Thunberg, five others were arrested. Danish media reports indicate that Thunberg has since been released.
