Bobi Wine, Uganda’s main opposition leader, was shot in the leg during a confrontation with security agents in a northern suburb of the capital, Kampala, Sky News reports.
Videos posted online show Wine surrounded by supporters who shout that he has been shot before helping him into a waiting car.
Wine’s party, the National Unity Platform, which holds the most seats of any opposition group in the national assembly, confirmed the incident on X, alleging that Ugandan security operatives “have made an attempt on the life of” Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.
“He was shot in the leg and seriously injured in Bulindo, Wakiso District,” the party stated.
It is unclear whether Wine was targeted with a live bullet or a tear gas projectile.
Wine, a popular musician and politician, ran for president in 2021, losing to President Yoweri Museveni in an election he alleged was rigged. He is particularly popular among young Ugandans in urban areas.
Museveni, a long-time US ally on regional security, has been in power since 1986 and amended the constitution to remove the age limit for presidents. At 79 years old, he has resisted calls to announce his retirement.
Uganda has not had a peaceful transfer of power since independence from the British in 1962.
