A boating accident off the coast of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, has killed one person, left two missing, and injured several others in what officials are calling a “major marine incident.”

On Monday evening, a motorboat carrying nine people reportedly collided with a jetty at the mouth of the Connecticut River.

Emergency responders were called to the scene around 9:15 p.m. and found the boat partially submerged and severely damaged near Harbor One Marina. Six people were rescued from the water and taken to local hospitals for treatment. However, an adult male was recovered deceased, and search efforts are ongoing for two others who remain missing. According to the North Madison Volunteer Fire Department, the missing individuals were not wearing life jackets.

The United States Coast Guard, in collaboration with local search and rescue teams, is actively scouring the waters with air and water support in an attempt to locate the missing passengers. According to the Coast Guard’s Long Island Sound sector, the boat collided with the breakwall at high speed, breaking apart and ejecting all nine passengers into the water.

As the investigation continues, no further information about the accident’s cause or the victims’ identities has been released. The town of Old Saybrook, about 30 miles east of New Haven, is still the focus of the ongoing search operation.
