Rebecca Cheptegei, a Ugandan Olympian and renowned long-distance runner, was brutally attacked and set on fire by her boyfriend, CBS News reports, citing the police.

The incident has shocked the nation and sparked widespread condemnation.

According to police reports, the attack occurred on Monday evening in the outskirts of Kampala. Cheptegei’s boyfriend, identified as Jacob Kiplimo, allegedly doused her with gasoline and set her ablaze after a heated argument.

The athlete sustained severe burns and was rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment. Her condition is said to be critical.

“We are treating this case with the utmost seriousness,” stated a police spokesperson. “The suspect, Jacob Kiplimo, has been apprehended and is in custody. He will be arraigned in court soon to face charges related to attempted murder.”

Cheptegei, a celebrated athlete, has represented Uganda in multiple international competitions, including the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she finished eighth in the 10,000 meters. She is also a two-time world champion in the 10,000 meters and holds several national records.

The attack has sent shockwaves through Uganda’s sporting community, with athletes and officials expressing outrage and calling for justice.

“This is a horrific act of violence against a talented and inspiring athlete,” said Uganda’s Minister of Sports, Peter Ogwang. “We condemn this crime in the strongest terms and stand in solidarity with Rebecca Cheptegei and her family.”

The incident has also raised concerns about domestic violence and gender-based violence in Uganda.

“This case highlights the urgent need to address the pervasive issue of violence against women in our society,” said a spokesperson from the Uganda Women’s Network. “We must work together to ensure that women and girls can live free from fear and violence.”
