James Darren, “Gidget” and “Star Trek” Actor, Dead at 88
James Darren, the versatile actor best known for his roles in the classic films “Gidget” and “Star Trek,” passed away on Tuesday at the age of 88, CBS News reports.
Darren’s career spanned over six decades, leaving an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.
He shot to fame in 1959 with his portrayal of the charming surfer boy “Moondoggie” in the beloved teen film “Gidget,” alongside Sandra Dee. The film’s success launched Darren’s career, and he went on to star in a string of popular movies, including “The Gene Krupa Story” (1959) and “The Lively Set” (1964).
Darren’s talent extended beyond the silver screen. He was a successful singer, releasing several hit albums and appearing on popular television programs like “The Ed Sullivan Show” and “American Bandstand.”
His career led him to the world of “Star Trek” in 1967, where he portrayed the enigmatic and charming character, “Lieutenant Commander Richard “Dick” Tracy,” in the episode “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield.”
Darren continued to act throughout his career, appearing in numerous television shows and films, including “The Twilight Zone,” “The Rockford Files,” and “The Love Boat.”
