San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Ricky Pearsall is recovering at home following his release from a hospital after being shot and wounded during an attempted robbery in San Francisco on Saturday, CBS News reports.

The team confirmed on Sunday that Pearsall was released from the hospital and is recovering from a bullet wound to his chest.

The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. local time near Union Square, according to San Francisco Police Chief William Scott. Pearsall was walking when he was approached by an armed suspect who attempted to rob him, using a gun.

Responding officers apprehended the suspect, a 17-year-old male from Tracy, California, shortly after the incident. Both Pearsall and the suspect were taken to San Francisco General Hospital.

The suspect, whose name was not released due to his age, was also hospitalized in stable condition.

Chief Scott confirmed that two rounds were fired from the suspect’s gun and that the weapon was recovered at the scene. He added that there was no indication that Pearsall was targeted because of his status as a football player and that investigators believe the suspect acted alone.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed and Chief Scott assured the public that there are additional police officers in Union Square and that they will continue to increase police presence in the area following the incident.

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced that criminal charges against the suspect are expected to be filed by Wednesday.

Pearsall was drafted by the 49ers in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft with the 31st overall pick. He has been sidelined with injuries since joining the team, missing time during training camp due to hamstring and shoulder issues. He returned to practice this past week wearing a non-contact blue jersey as his shoulder heals.
