A woman fell into a 26-foot deep sinkhole in the Dang Wangi area of Kuala Lumpur on Friday after the pavement she was walking on suddenly collapsed, burying her alive, CBS News reports, local authorities.
Eyewitnesses reported that the woman was walking along the pavement when the ground unexpectedly gave way beneath her feet. The Kuala Lumpur fire and rescue department received a distress call shortly after the incident occurred.
Preliminary reports suggest that the victim may be an Indian national, but local police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman stated that her identity has not been confirmed as investigations are still underway.
Rescue efforts are ongoing, with authorities barricading part of the area and utilizing an excavator to clear debris from the sinkhole. Despite their efforts, officials have reported no signs of the victim thus far.
“The search will continue until the victim is found,” Sulizmie confirmed, though he refrained from commenting on the woman’s possible condition or the cause of the collapse.
