Alaska Hunter Hospitalized After Bear Mauling, Shot During Attack
An Alaskan hunter is recovering in the hospital after being mauled by a brown bear and accidentally shot during an attempt to fend off the attack which occurred on Saturday in a remote area off the Resurrection Pass trail on the Kenai Peninsula, southwest of Anchorage, CBS News reports.
The 32-year-old hunter sustained serious injuries from both the mauling and a gunshot to the leg. He and a hunting companion opened fire on the bear, but it is unclear who fired the shot that struck the hunter.
The bear was ultimately killed by the hunters, and the injured hunter was flown by helicopter to an Anchorage hospital. His current condition is unknown.
This attack comes just days after a 3-year-old girl was mauled by a black bear in a tent at a private campground in Montana, near Yellowstone National Park. It also marks the second time in less than two years that a hunter has been accidentally shot during a bear attack. In October 2022, a hunter in Wyoming accidentally shot himself in the leg while trying to fend off a grizzly bear attack.
