A new survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research has suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris overshadows former President Donald Trump on several leadership qualities, although Americans are slightly more likely to trust Trump on the economy and immigration.
The poll reveals that nearly half of US citizens believe qualities like “committed to democracy” and “disciplined” better describe Harris, while only about 3 in 10 associate those attributes with Trump.
Similarly, 4 in 10 Americans see Harris as someone who “cares about people like you,” compared to 3 in 10 who say the same about Trump. When it comes to “honesty,” 4 in 10 choose Harris, while 24% say that quality better describes Trump.
The poll comes amid the ongoing efforts of both parties to define Harris as she prepares to accept the Democratic nomination at the upcoming convention. While the poll suggests she shares of the same baggage that burdened President Joe Biden before his exit from the race, she holds advantages over Trump in certain areas.
Roughly the same number of Americans view both Trump and Harris as strong leaders, and similarly, believe they are capable of handling crises.
While voters are evenly split on who they believe is better positioned to win the November presidential election, the survey shows a shift in perception. In July, before Biden withdrew from the race, only 2 in 10 Americans thought he was more capable of winning, while twice as many thought that about Trump.
